Install and set up SameSet

About three minutes. You do this once — after that SameSet starts together with Live and updates itself.

What you need

• A Mac with macOS 13 Ventura or newer — Apple Silicon or Intel.
• Ableton Live 12 — Intro, Standard or Suite.
• Internet: 5 Mbit/s or faster. Everyone in the room needs their own copy of SameSet.
• The plugins your project uses, installed on every Mac in the room.

1. Download and move to Applications

   Download

   Go to sameset.app/download and click Download for Mac. The file is called SameSet.dmg.

   Open the file

   Double-click SameSet.dmg in Downloads. A window with the SameSet icon and the Applications folder opens.

   Drag SameSet to Applications

   Drag the icon onto the Applications folder. Don’t run the app from the disk image — it can’t update itself from there.

2. Allow SameSet to open

macOS checks apps downloaded from the internet. The first time you open SameSet you may see a warning.

   If macOS says it can’t verify the developer, click Done (or Cancel).

   Open System Settings

   Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security. Scroll down to the message about SameSet and click Open Anyway.

   Confirm

   Enter your Mac password if asked and click Open. You only do this once.

3. Three steps inside SameSet

   Your name

   Type the name other people will see in the room, for example Max, and click Continue. SameSet creates your account — no email or password needed.

   Add SameSet to Live

   Click Add. SameSet copies a small Remote Script into your Ableton User Library.

   Restart Live and turn SameSet on

   Click Restart Live. Then in Live open Settings → Link, Tempo & MIDI and choose SameSet as a Control Surface, with Input and Output set to None.

When the third step turns green (Live connected), you’re ready. SameSet will now start automatically every time you open Live.

4. Turn on notifications

SameSet tells you when someone joins, when the project was updated or the connection dropped — even when Live is full screen. Click Turn on notifications in the app and allow them in the macOS prompt.

The panel over Live

While Live is in front, a small SameSet panel floats above it. It never takes focus away from Live.

• Dot — just the logo. A coloured badge means something is waiting for you.
• Pill — room code, sync status and who’s here.
• Full panel — people, tracks they’re on, project updates and settings.

Click the panel to expand it, use Collapse to shrink it. You can turn the panel off in the menu bar: SameSet → Panel over Live.

Updates and uninstalling

SameSet checks for updates itself and shows New version available · Update. Updates are signed and installed in a few seconds.

To uninstall: quit SameSet from the menu bar, move SameSet.app from Applications to the Trash, and in Live set Control Surface back to None. Downloaded projects stay in ~/Music/SameSet.
